Toyota Dominates Consumer Reports Top Picks for 2007

Consumer Reports magazine has just released Wednesday its top picks for new cars based on its own testing, reported reliability by a survey of car owners and government safety rankings. In what seems to have become a trend lately, the Japanese automakers shut out the competition in what is considered an influential list of the 10 best new vehicles for 2007, with models from Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. Ltd. Leading the pack.

Note that for the second time in the 10-year history of the list, all of the magazine's top picks were Japanese. 55 of the 59 used car models recommended by the magazine were also Japanese, again dominated by Toyota and Honda.

It’s the worst time to be bumped out of the list for the trouble-hounded Detroit-based automakers -- General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group. Amidst the closing of plants, cutting of jobs, and other cost-cutting measures in order to cope with a devastating loss of market share the last thing the folks at Detroit need is a snub by one of the most influential consumer watch groups.

Analysts are predicting all three to post lower monthly sales for February when results are announced this week.
In stark contrast all things are looking up for Toyota as it continues to be the auto industry's fastest-growing star. The giant Japanese automaker is right on track this year to surpass Chrysler and Ford in U.S. sales. Toyota looks very much intent on taking the industry's top spot in global sales from General Motors.

Consumer Reports has given Toyota the lead for the top picks for 2007, with four vehicles, followed closely by rival Honda, with three.
